The Majagenser and the Majagenser my size are the cutest, cosiest roll neck jumpers by Norwegian Knitting designer  Nina Isabell Abrahamsen of Mamaknit.No. They’ve been on my to knit list for a while but the English pattern for the adult version of the jumper, the Majagenser mysize, only came out in January and I had so many UFOs to get out the way that I only started on the first one a couple of weeks ago.

I wanted to start with the smaller one for two reasons:

  1. I was sure as to what colour I wanted to knit in, light pink. For the mysize version I was wavering between the pink and the light grey. I’d not seen the pink in real life before so it was a good opportunity to see both the yarn and how it looks knitted.
  2. I’d never knit anything using the moss stitch and was afraid it would take me forever to finish due to having to constantly move the yarn back and forth. It didn’t! In fact, it was one of my fastest knits ever. It will probably take me longer to write this blog post than it took to knit the jumper! (it did)

The jumper is knit in the round using 4mm and 5mm circular and double pointed needles. It was the first time I noticed the importance of good needles. My non-labelled 4mm DPN gave me the worst cramps in my fingers whilst I was knitting the sleeve cuffs and even my trusted Knit-pros interchangeable circulars weren’t as comfortable when I was knitting the body in moss stitch. I’d bought some ADDI short lace tips interchangeable circulars in 5mm just to try them out after the success i had with their really tiny fixed circulars which I much prefer when making sleeves than using DPN, and let me tell you – GO GET SOME!! they are amazing and as soon as my finances permit I’m getting all the ADDI needles!

The jumper is knit bottom up, the sleeves are knitted separately and then all parts are joined together using raglan felling which is where you decrease stitches on either side of the sleeve join. There’s lots of videos on YOU TUBE that show you how to do this so in the interest of getting this post out there sometime this year I’ll leave it at that!

I knit the size 3 as that’s what my little mouse is and the fit is perfect on her, boxy and oversized. Just be careful as she’s not the tallest for her age and the jumper sits just on her hips so if your little one is on the taller side or you want more than a season’s wear out of you may want to knit it a bit longer. The drops air is as always a delight to work with and to wear – there’s nothing worse than an itchy jumper other than an itchy roll neck jumper!

There’s really not much more to say about this pattern other than its amazing, go make one now! I’m going to leave you here so I can cast on the majagenser my size whilst little Miss V is still at pre-school 🙂
